Ask TASSQ: A Problem-Solving Workshop on Test Automation

FEBRUARY DINNER MEETING
Tuesday, February 27, 2007

This special workshop format based on a powerful approach developed by Gerald M. Weinberg and Rebecca Winant for the annual AYE Conference in Phoenix AZ, returns with questions and answers on test automation, as asked and answered by TASSQ’s own members.

Have Questions? Have Answers?
How to be effective at test automation; how to improve your chances of success; how to build large test automation efforts; what problems do test automators run into and how to solve them. These are questions we all face at some time. Get answers! Bring your problems and questions to TASSQ’s February meeting, and exchange problems and solutions at a roundtable session with experienced test automators, managers, and team members. Are you a test automator, consultant, or tester who uses automation. Do you have tricks, tips, or pitfalls to offer for people who automate the testing of applications? Offer help! Bring your skills in listening, analysis, troubleshooting, and counseling and join the open panel of experts as it shares its knowledge and wisdom with Toronto’s largest community of quality professionals.

As in previous Ask TASSQ sessions, the focus of the workshop is on collaborative problem-solving, taking advantage of TASSQ’s collective experience and expertise. There are several ways to participate in the meeting:

  • Bring a problem, a question, or a challenge, based on interaction between project management and teams, for which you seek an answer. Write the problem on a 5x7 card, and submit it for discussion. Although “clients” are encouraged to identify themselves, problems may also be presented anonymously.
  • When you feel it appropriate to do so, join the open panel as a “consultant” to ask questions, present observations, and offer suggestions. After you have made your contribution, return to your seat.
  • Act as a scribe to record the discussion for later distribution to TASSQ members.
  • Simply watch and listen, observing the interaction between participants and panelists. Note the different skills, techniques, and approaches that people use to solve problems. Identify those who share your challenges, ask clarifying questions from the floor, or find a consultant who can help your organization. Focus on the value of collaboration between professionals as a means of untangling difficult technical, logistical, or interpersonal problems.

At previous Ask TASSQ sessions, we saw a lively exchange between “clients” and “consultants”, and continued discussion even after the session ended. This is a valuable educational experience for TASSQ members and non-members alike, both in terms of the problems posed and the means to make progress in solving them. Please join us for another stimulating and engaging evening!
